A not-so-manic Monday...

As I peered outside through bleary eyes this morning, I saw a steady stream of cars clipping along Innes. It was 0550hrs. I was convinced that if we did not leave the house by 0615, we would end up caught in the snarl of morning rush-hour traffic. Armed with tea and coffee respectively, my better half and I pulled out of the driveway at 0617hrs.

Surprisingly, we moved along Innes at a steady pace. There was no major slow down at Orleans or any other major intersection. We cruised right through and exited along the turnoff for Blackburn Hamlet (or Black Burnt Omelet as I often call it). We headed along the main thoroughfare at a sedate pace (wisely so, as we passed a semi-hidden traffic cop waiting to pounce on any unwary speeders...), with maybe one or two other vehicles. The traffic lights were with us and it was only minutes before we turned right onto Bear Brook, which would take us to St. Joseph Blvd. and the entrance to the Rockcliffe Parkway. Again, traffic was very light. We arrived at St. Joseph and there were two cars ahead of us, waiting to cross the boulevard and take the Parkway as well. The traffic along St. Joseph itself was steady, but was also moving at a good rate. We had probably left home at the 'golden hour'...

As we crossed over to the Parkway, we were able to maintain an average speed of 70kmh all the way in. Not a snag, not a hitch anywhere. I arrived at work a couple of minutes before 0700hrs. I was suitably impressed. Had we left 10 to 15 minutes later, I'm sure it would have had a different outcome. Sometimes a mere 5 minutes one way or the other, will make all the difference in a morning commute. This morning however, the traffic Gods were with us. We'll see how long we can keep this up. By all accounts, tomorrow morning should be the true test. Wednesday should be interesting, as they are currently calling for a 15-20cm snowfall on that day.

As for the transit workers, their union brass are attempting to dissuade them from accepting the latest contract offer. They will be voting on this no earlier than Thursday, so that means at least one more week added to this strike which is already in it's 27th day. As my step-daughter would so eloquently put it: "Fuck them in the eye...". If they're looking for sympathy from the riding public, the only place they'll find it is between "shit" and "syphillis" in the dictionary...
